PICTORIAL: Niger Buries Tanker Explosion Victims, Offers Survivors Free Treatment

The Niger State Government has conducted a mass burial for victims of the recent tanker explosion in the Rijau Local Government Area, which left many people dead and several others critically injured.

The explosion occurred when a fuel-laden tanker reportedly lost control and crashed near a busy market, triggering a massive fire that engulfed nearby shops, vehicles, and pedestrians. Eyewitnesses said the flames spread rapidly, leaving a trail of destruction before emergency services could respond.

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, represented by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Ahmed Suleiman Yumu, led a delegation of senior officials to the burial ground where prayers were offered for the repose of the victims’ souls.

“This is a tragedy that has thrown our state into mourning,” Yumu said. “The government stands firmly with the affected families, and we will ensure that all survivors receive full medical care at no cost.”

Mass Burial Amid Grief and Prayers

The victims were buried according to Islamic rites in a solemn ceremony attended by family members, community leaders, and emergency officials.

Officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) coordinated the burial, ensuring that all bodies were properly identified and handled in line with health safety guidelines.

The atmosphere was heavy with sorrow as relatives clutched photographs of loved ones and community members consoled one another in grief.

Survivors Receive Free Medical Care

The Niger State Ministry of Health announced that all survivors are receiving free medical treatment at government facilities.
According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Bello Tukur, special burn units have been set up at Rijau General Hospital and the Minna Specialist Hospital to treat severe injuries.

“We have mobilised trauma experts and burn specialists to provide immediate and continuous care for all victims,” Tukur explained. “Our goal is to ensure full recovery and prevent avoidable deaths.”

Medical teams, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Doctors Without Borders (MSF), have also deployed emergency supplies, including burn dressings, antibiotics, and pain relief drugs.

Federal and Humanitarian Support

Representatives from the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, NEMA, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) visited the scene to assess the level of damage and provide relief materials to affected families.

NEMA’s North-Central Coordinator, Zainab Sa’idu, described the tragedy as “heart-wrenching,” adding that the agency will work with state authorities to strengthen road safety and emergency response systems.

“This incident underscores the urgent need for strict regulation of fuel transportation routes and better infrastructure maintenance,” she said.

Relief materials distributed included food supplies, mattresses, blankets, and cash assistance to the bereaved families and displaced victims.

Community Demands Better Roads and Safety Measures

Residents of Rijau, still reeling from the shock, have called on the federal and state governments to repair the dilapidated highways that have become notorious for accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles.

“We’ve lost too many lives on this same road. The government must act fast before another tragedy happens,” said Usman Ibrahim, a shop owner who lost two relatives in the explosion.

Community leaders also appealed for stricter monitoring of tanker drivers, noting that reckless driving, poor maintenance, and overloading often lead to such deadly incidents.
