Police Arrest Robbery, Drug Suspects in Niger Raids
The Niger State Police Command has arrested several robbery and drug suspects following a series of coordinated raids across different parts of the state, aimed at curbing rising criminal activities and restoring public confidence.
In a statement released on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Wasiu Abiodun, said the arrests were made after intelligence-led operations in Minna, Suleja, and Bida, resulting in the recovery of dangerous weapons, illicit substances, and stolen items.
Key Arrests and Recoveries
According to the police, among those arrested were members of a notorious armed robbery syndicate that had been terrorising motorists and residents along major highways in the state. The suspects were found in possession of locally-made pistols, cutlasses, and cartridges, as well as valuables believed to have been stolen from victims.
“The command’s tactical teams conducted operations based on actionable intelligence that led to the arrest of several suspected robbers and drug peddlers. Items recovered include firearms, motorcycles, hard drugs, and other exhibits,” Abiodun stated.
In a separate operation, the police also raided a suspected drug distribution hideout in Suleja, where substantial quantities of cannabis, tramadol, and other narcotics were seized. Several suspects were apprehended and are currently assisting with investigations.
Proactive Policing Efforts
The Commissioner of Police, CP Shawulu Ebenezer Danmamman, commended the efforts of the operatives and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to making Niger State unsafe for criminals.
“We will not relent in our duty to rid the state of criminal elements. The police will continue to collaborate with communities to ensure lasting peace and safety,” he said.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, assuring that all suspects will be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
Community Commendation
Local residents in Minna and Bida expressed relief following the arrests, noting that the operations had restored a sense of security in previously volatile areas.
“These raids have reduced the number of night robberies and cult-related activities. We hope the police will sustain this momentum,” said a resident of Tunga community, Minna.
The police further reiterated their warning to drug dealers and criminal gangs to desist from illegal activities or face the full weight of the law.
