Soludo Explores the Cultural Importance of the New Yam Festival
Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has emphasized the enduring cultural significance of the New Yam Festival, describing it as a unifying tradition that strengthens communal bonds across Igbo land.
Speaking at the 2025 celebrations in his hometown, Isuofia, Soludo highlighted the festival as more than just a harvest ritual but a symbol of gratitude, continuity, and identity for the Igbo people. He noted that yam, regarded as the “king of crops” in Igbo culture, represents prosperity, resilience, and hard work.
The governor urged Ndi Anambra and the wider Igbo community to continue preserving their cultural heritage, stressing that such traditions not only sustain identity but also attract global interest and tourism.
Traditional rulers, cultural groups, and community members who attended the event showcased music, dance, and age-long customs that have been passed from generation to generation.
Soludo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting cultural festivals as a means of boosting unity and local economic development.
