Sophia Wilson Scores Early but Brazil Defeats USWNT 2-1 in São Paulo Friendly
The United States Women’s National Team suffered a 2-1 defeat to Brazil in an entertaining international friendly in São Paulo, despite taking the lead through an early goal from Sophia Wilson. The match served as an important test for both nations as they continue preparations for future international competitions and the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Americans could hardly have asked for a better start. Just two minutes into the contest, Sophia Wilson capitalized on a Brazilian defensive mistake, collected the loose ball outside the penalty area, and calmly curled a low shot into the corner of the net. The strike gave the United States a 1-0 advantage and marked Wilson’s first international goal since her return to the national team following maternity leave. It was also her 25th goal for the USWNT.
The early breakthrough briefly silenced the large crowd at São Paulo’s Neo Química Arena, but Brazil responded quickly. The hosts increased their intensity and began putting pressure on the American defense with aggressive pressing and rapid attacking transitions.
Brazil found its equalizer in the 11th minute when Tainá Maranhão connected with a cross from Isabela and directed a header past goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn. The goal energized the home crowd and shifted momentum firmly in favor of the South Americans.
Only three minutes later, Brazil completed the turnaround. Bia Zaneratto initiated the move before continuing her run into the penalty area. After receiving a return pass from Dudinha, Zaneratto finished clinically to give Brazil a 2-1 lead. The goal ultimately proved to be the winner in a match where all three goals were scored within the opening 14 minutes.
Following the frantic start, the match settled into a competitive and physical contest. Brazil continued to challenge the United States with its pressing game, while the visitors attempted to regain control through possession and attacking substitutions. Coach Emma Hayes introduced fresh legs throughout the second half in an effort to spark a comeback.
The United States created several opportunities after the break and enjoyed extended periods of pressure, but Brazil’s defense held firm. Goalkeeper Lelê and later substitute Lorena produced key interventions to preserve the hosts’ advantage. Despite a stronger second-half performance from the Americans, they were unable to find the equalizing goal.
The match also marked another important milestone for Wilson, whose return has been closely watched by fans and coaching staff alike. Her early goal demonstrated the attacking instincts that made her one of the team’s most dangerous forwards before her absence and provided a positive takeaway despite the defeat.
For Brazil, the victory represented another significant result against one of the world’s strongest women’s football programs. Playing in front of more than 31,000 supporters, the hosts showcased their growing confidence and quality while earning only their fifth-ever win over the United States.
Although disappointed by the outcome, the USWNT will view the match as a valuable learning experience. The encounter exposed areas for improvement while also providing competitive minutes for players returning from injury and maternity leave. Head coach Emma Hayes has emphasized the importance of building chemistry and evaluating options ahead of future tournaments.
The two teams will meet again in Fortaleza for the second match of the June international window. The United States will be eager to respond and even the series, while Brazil will look to build on its impressive home victory and continue its strong run of form against elite opposition.
