Tinubu to Amupitan: Make 2027 Polls Transparent, Violence-Free
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Dr. Abdullahi Amupitan, to ensure that the 2027 general elections are transparent, credible, and free from violence.
Speaking at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, during a meeting with the new INEC leadership, Tinubu emphasized that the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy depends largely on the integrity and impartiality of the electoral process.
“Nigerians deserve elections that truly reflect their will. The 2027 polls must be transparent, fair, and violence-free. INEC must rise above partisanship and strengthen public confidence in the electoral system,” the President stated.
Tinubu reminded the electoral body of its constitutional responsibility to conduct elections in line with the rule of law, urging the new chairman to build on the gains of past reforms while correcting observed shortcomings from previous elections.
He commended Amupitan’s professional background and experience, expressing confidence in his capacity to deliver credible elections and uphold the principles of accountability, inclusiveness, and technological innovation in election management.
“You have a duty to protect democracy and ensure that every vote counts. Nigerians will judge this administration by how free and fair the next elections are. I trust that you will not disappoint,” Tinubu added.
In his response, Dr. Amupitan assured the President and Nigerians that INEC under his leadership would operate with utmost transparency and independence, pledging to strengthen collaboration with political parties, civil society organizations, and security agencies to ensure peaceful and credible polls.
“Our goal is to deliver elections that meet international standards and restore citizens’ trust. We will prioritize voter education, improve logistics, and enforce strict compliance with the Electoral Act,” Amupitan said.
He also disclosed plans to upgrade the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and deploy real-time result transmission technology to enhance transparency during vote collation.
Political observers have welcomed Tinubu’s charge as timely, noting that Nigeria’s next general elections will test the resilience of its democratic institutions and the effectiveness of ongoing electoral reforms.
