Fatal Auto Accident Leaves Yobe Varsity Student Dead, Others Injured
On August 23, 2025, Amina Yakubu, a 100-level Biology Education student at Yobe State University (YSU) in Damaturu, was killed in a tragic road accident along Gujba Road near the university’s main gate around 5:30 p.m.
The crash involved a tricycle (Keke NAPEP) carrying Amina and others, which collided with a vehicle. Four other occupants, including a university matron, sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment, with YSU management coordinating with authorities to ensure their care.
The Yobe State Police Command, through spokesperson SP Dungus Abdulkarim, attributed the crash to road diversions caused by military operations, forcing motorists into a single lane, compounded by impatience and reckless driving. Amina, from Potiskum Local Government Area, was buried per Islamic rites.
YSU’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bukar Jamri, and Governor Mai Mala Buni expressed condolences, with Buni ordering free treatment for the injured and urging safer driving practices. The incident has deeply affected the YSU community, with calls for improved road safety and training for commercial tricycle operators
