Trump Says Threat Led US to Pull Bombers From RAF Fairford
US President Donald Trump has confirmed that threats led the United States to remove its B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, Britain.
Trump said the aircraft were moved because the US did not want to leave them exposed after receiving information about a possible threat.
The comments provide the clearest explanation so far for the sudden withdrawal of the American bombers from the British military base.
The Pentagon had previously confirmed that all US bombers deployed at RAF Fairford had returned to their home stations in the United States. However, the department did not initially provide a specific reason for the move.
Trump Confirms There Was a Threat
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said the bombers did not leave RAF Fairford by accident.
“There were some threats,” the president said.
Trump explained that the US decided to move the aircraft rather than leave them at a location where they could potentially be targeted.
He said the aircraft had only been moved “a little bit” and were not being taken out of military service.
Trump also suggested that American officials knew who was behind the threat.
When asked whether the people involved were connected to Iran, Trump said they would be linked to Iran.
Bombers Moved After Security Concerns
The withdrawal came about a week after five British men were arrested near RAF Fairford.
The suspects were detained on September 27 after police received reports of suspicious activity involving three white vans near the base.
Police searched the vehicles but did not find explosive devices. They did recover a quantity of petrol.
A sixth suspect, a dual British-Iranian national, was later arrested in London in connection with the investigation.
All six people have since been released on bail while the investigation continues.
Iran Link Under Investigation
British authorities have been investigating whether a foreign state was involved in the suspected plot.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously said there were strong indications of an Iranian connection.
Iran has rejected the allegations and denied involvement in any planned attack.
The investigation has therefore not established publicly that the suspects were acting on behalf of Tehran.
However, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards had previously warned that RAF Fairford could be considered a legitimate target because American bombers had been using the base for military operations against Iran.
US Officials Give Different Details
Trump’s comments came after other senior US officials gave a more cautious explanation for the bomber withdrawal.
Vice President JD Vance said the decision was made out of an abundance of caution to protect American personnel.
Vance also pointed to concerns about Iranian threats against US interests.
However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there was no direct evidence publicly linking the bomber withdrawal to the suspected Iranian plot.
Rubio said the Pentagon regularly reallocates military resources according to operational needs.
The different explanations have added to questions about what intelligence prompted the sudden movement of the aircraft.
Why RAF Fairford Matters
RAF Fairford is one of the few European airfields capable of supporting America’s heavy bomber aircraft.
The base is located about 90 miles west of London and has been used by the US military for major operations in the Middle East.
The B-1 bombers stationed there had also been used in US strikes against Iran.
Because of its role, the base has become an important part of American military operations in Europe.
The aircraft can carry long-range weapons and can be deployed for precision strikes over significant distances.
Britain Says the Base Is Safe
Despite the American withdrawal, British officials have insisted that RAF Fairford remains secure.
Downing Street said established security measures are in place to protect military facilities in Britain.
The UK government has not confirmed the specific intelligence behind the American decision.
The contrast between Britain’s public reassurance and the rapid US withdrawal has attracted attention, particularly because the aircraft were moved shortly after the arrests near the base.
US Bombers Remain Ready
The Pentagon has stressed that the withdrawal does not mean the United States has lost its ability to conduct long-range military operations.
The bombers have simply been returned to their home stations in the US.
American officials say the bomber force remains capable of carrying out missions when required.
Investigation Continues
The reason for the sudden withdrawal is now clearer after Trump’s statement.
The US president says threats prompted the decision, while other officials have stressed caution and routine military redeployment.
For now, the American bombers have left RAF Fairford, but the United States continues to maintain its military capabilities and readiness in the wider region.
The developments are likely to keep attention focused on security around the British base and on the wider tensions between the United States, Britain and Iran.
