U.S. Fighter Jet Shoots Down Iranian Drone Approaching Aircraft Carrier in Arabian Sea
Washington, February 3, 2026 — The United States military has confirmed that a U.S. fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone that approached an American aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea, marking a sharp escalation in military tensions between Washington and Tehran.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the unmanned aerial vehicle, identified as an Iranian Shahed-139 drone, “aggressively approached” the USS Abraham Lincoln while it was transiting in international waters on Tuesday. The carrier was operating roughly 500 miles (about 800 kilometers) from Iran’s southern coastline when the incident occurred.
A U.S. F-35C fighter jet launched from the carrier strike group intercepted and shot down the drone “in self-defense and to protect the aircraft carrier and personnel on board,” CENTCOM spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins said in a statement. No U.S. service members were harmed, and no American equipment was damaged during the engagement.
Officials said U.S. forces took multiple de-escalatory measures before the shootdown, but the drone continued its approach. Centcom described the action as necessary to safeguard the carrier and maintain the safety of its crew.
The encounter comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, as Washington has recently bolstered its naval and air forces in the Middle East in response to Iranian actions and regional instability. Diplomats from both countries are also reportedly preparing for negotiations later this week—efforts that now face added strain following Tuesday’s aerial confrontation.
In a separate but related development, U.S. Navy forces responded later in the day to reports that Iranian small boats and another drone were harassing a U.S.-flagged commercial tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. According to CENTCOM, Iranian vessels approached the ship at high speeds, prompting a U.S. destroyer and Air Force assets to come to the tanker’s defense.
Iranian state media acknowledged losing contact with a drone in international waters but did not immediately confirm details of the shootdown or clarify the drone’s mission. Tehran’s U.N. mission declined to comment on the incident.
The U.S. government has not indicated whether the shootdown will influence upcoming diplomatic contacts, but military and foreign policy analysts warn that such confrontations carry the risk of wider escalation if not carefully managed.
