UNILORIN graduates 11,886 students 316 first class
The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has announced the graduation of 11,886 students during its 38th convocation ceremony, with 316 of them earning First Class honours, underscoring the institution’s consistent reputation for academic excellence and discipline.
Speaking during the convocation held at the university’s main auditorium, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole (SAN), congratulated the graduating students for their hard work and perseverance, noting that the achievement reflects UNILORIN’s commitment to producing world-class graduates.
“Today, we celebrate diligence, excellence, and integrity — values that define the University of Ilorin,” Prof. Egbewole said. “Our graduates continue to make significant contributions both in Nigeria and globally.”
Breakdown of results
According to official statistics released by the university, the 11,886 graduating students cut across various faculties and academic levels:
- 316 bagged First Class degrees.
- 4,865 graduated with Second Class (Upper Division).
- 5,630 earned Second Class (Lower Division).
- 1,075 received Third Class and Pass degrees.
The Vice-Chancellor also disclosed that 241 students completed postgraduate programmes, including Doctoral and Master’s degrees, while several diploma and professional certification students were also conferred with their awards.
UNILORIN’s commitment to excellence
Prof. Egbewole reiterated that the university remains one of Nigeria’s leading academic institutions, maintaining uninterrupted academic calendars despite national challenges such as industrial strikes and funding constraints.
“Our institution continues to stand out for stability, research innovation, and quality teaching. We are proud to uphold our motto — Better by Far,” he added.
He further encouraged the new graduates to be ambassadors of integrity, stressing that the world now demands skills, innovation, and ethics in addition to academic credentials.
Chancellor, dignitaries commend university’s performance
The Chancellor, Oba Saka Adelola Matemilola, in his goodwill message, lauded the university’s management and staff for their dedication to maintaining high academic standards.
“UNILORIN remains a symbol of excellence in Nigerian higher education,” the monarch said. “This convocation demonstrates that with discipline and leadership, Nigerian universities can compete globally.”
Dignitaries in attendance included government officials, education stakeholders, and representatives of the National Universities Commission (NUC), who commended the university for its strong governance and research output.

Several graduating students expressed joy and relief after years of academic pursuit.
Temitope Adebayo, a First Class graduate of Electrical Engineering, said,
“It’s been tough but rewarding. UNILORIN gave us not only knowledge but also resilience. I’m proud to be part of this legacy.”
