Victor Munoz announced himself to the Anfield crowd in spectacular fashion as Liverpool twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Nottingham Forest on Saturday, rescuing a point for Andoni Iraola’s side and raising fresh questions about Cody Gakpo’s future at the club.
Liverpool entered the match looking for their first Premier League victory under Iraola after being held to a 2-2 draw by Newcastle United in their opening fixture. Instead, they were forced to fight back once again after Forest exposed several defensive weaknesses and twice took the lead.
For Munoz, however, the afternoon could hardly have been more significant.
The summer signing produced a brilliant finish in the 82nd minute to secure the draw, scoring his first goal for Liverpool in his full Premier League debut. The Spanish forward received a pass from Dominik Szoboszlai on the right side of the penalty area, turned sharply and fired a powerful effort that struck the underside of the crossbar before finding the net.
It was a moment that immediately changed the mood inside Anfield.
Munoz had already made an impact as a substitute against Newcastle last weekend, winning the stoppage-time penalty that allowed Szoboszlai to rescue a point. Against Forest, he went a step further by scoring the goal himself.
His influence is beginning to look difficult to ignore.
The 23-year-old joined Liverpool from Osasuna for a reported £34.5 million and was handed his first Premier League start as Iraola made two changes to the side that drew at Newcastle. His performance suggested that he could quickly become an important part of Liverpool’s attacking options.
That could become particularly important because Liverpool’s attack is undergoing significant change.
Liverpool are reportedly finalizing a deal for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola in a transfer that could reach £123 million. The impending arrival has inevitably raised questions about how much playing time will be available for existing forwards.
Gakpo is one player whose position has consequently attracted attention.
The Dutch international has reportedly attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, and Barcola’s expected arrival could potentially increase speculation about whether Gakpo’s time at Anfield is approaching its end.
Yet if Saturday’s performance is anything to go by, Liverpool may have good reason to keep him.
Gakpo was one of Liverpool’s most effective attackers against Forest. His contribution to Alexander Isak’s equalizer was particularly impressive.
With Liverpool trailing 1-0, Gakpo produced a superb piece of skill on the right side before delivering a low cross across the six-yard box. Isak arrived at the far post and calmly tapped the ball into the net in the 60th minute.
It was Gakpo’s second major contribution in as many league games this season, after he scored Liverpool’s equalizer against Newcastle last weekend.
That consistency makes the question of whether this was his final Liverpool appearance particularly intriguing.
Gakpo was eventually substituted in the 71st minute, with Rio Ngumoha replacing him. Munoz remained on the field and eventually provided the decisive equalizer.
The decision to remove Gakpo rather than Munoz ultimately worked in Liverpool’s favor, but it also highlighted the growing competition for attacking positions.
Barcola’s arrival would only intensify that competition.
Liverpool have already invested heavily in their squad under Iraola, with major additions including Isak and Munoz. The expected Barcola deal would represent another enormous financial commitment as the club attempts to build a squad capable of challenging for major honors.
Saturday’s result, however, showed that attacking talent is not necessarily Liverpool’s biggest concern.
Their defensive organization remains problematic.
Forest took the lead in the 24th minute after Liverpool were caught during a swift counterattack. Dan Ndoye finished the move to give the visitors a deserved advantage.
Liverpool appeared to equalize through Florian Wirtz, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review because Jeremie Frimpong was offside in the buildup.
Forest continued to threaten, while Liverpool dominated possession without consistently turning that control into clear opportunities.
The Reds eventually found their breakthrough through Isak, but Forest immediately regained the advantage.
In the 70th minute, Neco Williams advanced into Liverpool’s penalty area after a quickly taken throw-in. Alisson rushed from his goal and was adjudged to have fouled Williams, resulting in a penalty.
Morgan Gibbs-White stepped up and calmly sent Alisson the wrong way.
At that stage, Forest appeared capable of securing a third consecutive Premier League victory at Anfield.
Instead, Munoz changed the story.
His late strike prevented another defeat and ensured Liverpool avoided losing their first home league match of the new era.
But the draw also means Iraola remains without a Premier League victory after two matches. Liverpool have now drawn both of their opening league fixtures 2-2, showing attacking promise while continuing to display defensive vulnerabilities.
For Munoz, the situation is very different.
Rather than going under the radar, the young Spaniard is rapidly becoming one of the most interesting new players at Anfield.
His impact against Newcastle earned him a penalty-winning moment. His full debut against Forest produced a spectacular goal. In the space of two matches, he has already demonstrated that he can influence games when Liverpool need him most.
His arrival may therefore prove more significant than initially expected.
Liverpool supporters will now watch the final days of the transfer window with particular interest. Barcola’s expected arrival could change the attacking hierarchy, while Gakpo’s future remains uncertain amid reported interest from other Premier League clubs.
For Gakpo, Saturday’s performance provided another reminder of what Liverpool could potentially lose.
For Munoz, it was another opportunity to demonstrate what the club may have gained.
The Spanish forward’s ability to produce decisive moments could become increasingly valuable as the season progresses.
Liverpool still have considerable work to do under Iraola. The attack possesses enormous potential, but the defense has already conceded four goals in two league matches.
The draw against Forest therefore offered both encouragement and warning.
Liverpool showed character by refusing to surrender after falling behind twice. Isak continues to settle into the attack, Gakpo remains productive and Munoz has emerged as an exciting new option.
But if Liverpool want to compete at the highest level, they will need to become considerably more reliable at the back.
For now, though, the biggest positive from Anfield was undoubtedly Munoz.
The summer signing delivered exactly what Liverpool needed when the game appeared to be slipping away.
His stunning 82nd-minute strike secured another draw, but it may also have announced the beginning of something much bigger.
While questions remain over Gakpo’s future and Barcola’s expected arrival, Victor Munoz is making a strong case to be part of Liverpool’s future.
And after two consecutive games in which he has played a decisive role, it may be time to stop asking whether Munoz has gone under the radar.
