17-Year-Old Boy Death in Abuja: Two Neighbours Arrested After Alleged Machete Attack on Mother
Two neighbours have been arrested in Abuja following the death of a 17-year-old boy who was reportedly beaten after attacking his mother with a machete.
The incident is said to have occurred in a residential area of the Federal Capital Territory, where residents were alerted by screams coming from the family’s home. According to preliminary accounts, the teenager allegedly assaulted his mother with a machete during a heated confrontation, leaving her injured.
Neighbours who reportedly heard the woman’s cries rushed to the scene and intervened. In the process, the boy was allegedly overpowered and beaten by some of the residents who came to her aid. He was later found unresponsive.
Emergency responders were contacted, and the teenager was confirmed dead shortly after. His body was subsequently taken away for medical examination, while the injured woman was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police authorities in the Federal Capital Territory confirmed that two neighbours had been arrested in connection with the boy’s death. They stated that the suspects are currently in custody and will be questioned as investigations continue.
A police source said the case is being treated as a homicide and that a full inquiry will be carried out to determine the level of involvement of each person who participated in restraining or assaulting the teenager.
“The command is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including what led to the alleged machete attack and how the boy sustained fatal injuries,” the source said.
Residents of the area expressed shock over the incident, describing the family as quiet and the situation as tragic. Some neighbours said they were torn between trying to save the woman from further harm and the outcome that followed the intervention.
Legal experts have warned that while citizens have a right to defend others in danger, excessive use of force can result in criminal liability. They noted that suspects will be charged to court once investigations are completed and the role of each individual is clearly established.
Police have appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, urging residents to contact security agencies in situations involving violent disputes.
