Zambian Police Officer’s New Year Mistake: 13 Prisoners Freed in Drunken Stupor
A Zambian police officer, Detective Inspector Titus Phiri, has been arrested for allegedly releasing 13 detainees from custody to allow them to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
The incident occurred at the Leonard Cheelo Police Post in Lusaka, where Phiri, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, seized the cell keys from a fellow officer and freed the detainees, stating they should “cross over into the New Year.”
Among the 15 detainees, 13 escaped, including individuals facing serious charges such as assault, robbery, and burglary. A manhunt is currently underway to recapture the escapees.
The Zambia Police Service has condemned Phiri’s actions, emphasizing their commitment to upholding law and order and stating that decisive action will be taken against any officer found abusing their authority.
