Tinubu accepts Yakubu’s resignation as INEC Chairman
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially accepted the resignation of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and honoured him with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) award.
According to a statement from the Presidential Villa on Monday, Tinubu commended Yakubu for his years of service and contributions to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions, particularly his leadership in conducting national and state elections since 2015.
The President described Yakubu as a “patriotic public servant” whose tenure was marked by bold reforms, technological innovations such as the BVAS system, and efforts to improve electoral transparency.
“Professor Yakubu has served Nigeria with integrity and dedication. His contributions to the nation’s electoral development will be remembered for years to come,” Tinubu stated.
Sources revealed that preparations are underway to appoint an acting INEC Chairman pending the nomination and confirmation of a substantive replacement.
Yakubu, who first assumed office in 2015 and was reappointed in 2020, is credited with modernising Nigeria’s electoral framework despite controversies surrounding recent elections.
