Rafa Benítez Agrees to Become Highest-Paid Coach in Greek League’s History
Spanish football tactician Rafa Benítez has reportedly reached an agreement to become the highest-paid manager in the history of the Greek Super League, after finalizing a lucrative deal with Olympiacos FC.
According to multiple European sports outlets, the 64-year-old former Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Newcastle United boss will sign a two-year contract worth an estimated €4.5 million per season, making him the best-paid coach ever in Greece’s top flight.
Benítez’s appointment comes as Olympiacos seeks to rebuild and reclaim dominance both domestically and in European competitions, following a mixed 2024–2025 campaign that saw the club finish behind Panathinaikos in the league standings.
“Rafa Benítez brings vast experience, professionalism, and a winning mentality that aligns with our ambitions,” a club source told reporters in Athens. “The board is confident he will restore Olympiacos to the summit of Greek football.”
The veteran manager is expected to arrive in Athens later this week to officially sign the deal and meet players before the club’s UEFA Europa League qualifying fixtures.
Benítez, known for his tactical discipline and data-driven approach, has managed some of Europe’s biggest clubs — including Liverpool, where he famously won the UEFA Champions League in 2005, and Chelsea, with whom he lifted the Europa League in 2013.
His most recent managerial stint was at Celta Vigo, where he resigned in early 2025 after a difficult season. The move to Greece is seen as both a challenge and an opportunity to re-establish his reputation in European football.
Greek sports analysts describe the deal as a “statement of intent” from Olympiacos, signaling their readiness to attract world-class talent and elevate the league’s global profile.
