Gay Nigerian Man Reportedly Dies After Suspected Homophobic Attack in Port Harcourt
A young man in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has reportedly lost his life following what authorities suspect to be a homophobic attack.
According to local reports, the victim was allegedly assaulted by a group of men who targeted him over his sexual orientation. Police sources said the incident occurred at a residential building in the D-Line area of Port Harcourt, and investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that a homicide investigation has been launched. Spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko stated that officers are working to identify and arrest all those involved.
“We are aware of the incident and are conducting a thorough investigation. No form of violence or discrimination will be tolerated under the law,” she said.
Human rights groups, including The Initiative for Equal Rights (TIERs) and Amnesty International Nigeria, have condemned the attack, describing it as a hate-motivated killing that highlights the urgent need for stronger protections for LGBTQ+ individuals in the country.
“This incident reflects the growing danger faced by sexual minorities in Nigeria. The government must ensure justice and end impunity for hate crimes,” TIERs said in a statement.
Local residents have also expressed shock, calling for peace and justice while urging authorities to promote tolerance and community safety.
