FMC Promises Probe as Power Outage Stalls Operation Midway
The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) has launched an internal investigation after a sudden power outage disrupted a surgical operation midway, sparking outrage and concern among patients’ relatives and staff.
According to reports, the incident occurred at one of the hospital’s operating theatres when electricity supply was cut off abruptly, forcing surgeons to suspend the procedure temporarily. Backup generators reportedly failed to start immediately, leaving the medical team in the dark for several minutes before power was restored.
In a statement issued on Friday, the hospital’s management described the incident as “regrettable and unacceptable,” assuring that a full-scale probe had been initiated to determine the cause of the failure and to prevent a recurrence.
“The management of FMC views this disruption with utmost seriousness. A committee has been set up to investigate the circumstances surrounding the power outage and identify any lapses in the backup system,” the statement read.
The hospital further noted that the patient involved in the operation had been stabilized and was receiving appropriate post-surgical care.
Meanwhile, some staff members blamed the incident on irregular power supply and outdated infrastructure, calling for urgent intervention to ensure that critical equipment is always powered, especially during surgeries and emergency care.
Health advocates have urged the Federal Ministry of Health to step in and address the recurring power challenges in public hospitals nationwide, warning that such incidents could lead to avoidable loss of lives.
