Suspected Herdsmen Kill Christian Missionary, Daughter and Son-in-Law; Infant Granddaughter Injured in Plateau Attack
A Christian missionary, his daughter, and his son-in-law have been gruesomely killed in Plateau State after gunmen suspected to be herdsmen attacked their rural community late Monday night.
Their infant granddaughter, who was found with injuries, miraculously survived the violence and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The attack occurred in the early hours in a village located within one of Plateau’s conflict-prone local government areas, where residents have endured repeated raids suspected to be linked to herdsmen militia groups.
According to local sources, the missionary—identified as a long-time community volunteer—was at home with his family when armed men stormed the residence. The assailants reportedly opened fire without warning, killing the missionary, his daughter, and her husband on the spot.
Neighbors said they heard multiple gunshots and cries for help but were too frightened to approach until the gunmen had fled.
The missionary’s granddaughter, believed to be under two years old, was discovered alive but injured. She was immediately rushed to a nearby clinic and later transferred to a better-equipped medical facility for further care.
Residents described the victims as peaceful people who had been actively involved in religious outreach, charity programs, and youth empowerment activities in the region.
The missionary was widely respected for his decades of service in rural evangelism and humanitarian work.
Local leaders say the community is now in mourning and fear that more attacks could follow if security presence is not strengthened.
Security operatives have begun an investigation, though no arrests had been announced at the time of reporting. Police and local vigilante groups have deployed additional patrols in the area to prevent further violence.
A police spokesperson condemned the attack, calling it “heartbreaking and unacceptable,” and assured residents that efforts were underway to track down the perpetrators.
