Abia Police Dismiss Reports of Bomb Discovery in Church
The Abia State Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that a bomb was discovered inside a church in the state, describing the information as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Monday, the police said no explosive device was found in any church within Abia State, contrary to reports circulating on social media and some online platforms. The command stressed that the claim had caused unnecessary panic among residents and worshippers.
According to the police, operatives were immediately deployed to the church mentioned in the report after the rumour surfaced. A thorough search of the premises was conducted by security personnel, including bomb disposal experts, but no suspicious object or explosive device was discovered.
The police spokesperson said preliminary findings showed that the alarm was based on misinformation and urged members of the public to verify security-related news from official sources before sharing it. The command warned that spreading false information about security threats could create fear and disrupt public peace.
Church leaders and members who were present at the time of the alleged incident were also said to have cooperated fully with the police during the search exercise. Normal activities reportedly resumed at the church shortly after officers confirmed that there was no threat.
The Abia State Police Command reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property, adding that there was no cause for alarm. It encouraged the public to report any genuine suspicious activity to the nearest police station rather than spreading unverified claims.
The command further stated that investigations were ongoing to identify the source of the false report, warning that anyone found responsible for spreading the rumour could face legal action under relevant laws.
Residents of the area have been advised to remain calm and go about their lawful activities, as security agencies continue to monitor the situation and maintain surveillance across the state.
