Armed robbers in Makurdi shoot young man and steal motorcycle
Armed robbers on Tuesday night shot a young man and made away with his motorcycle and mobile phone in Makurdi, Benue State.
The incident occurred along a less busy road within the town as the victim was returning home from work. Eyewitnesses said the assailants, who were riding on another motorcycle, suddenly blocked the victim’s path and ordered him to stop.
When the young man reportedly hesitated and attempted to turn back, one of the robbers shot him in the leg. The attackers then dragged him off his motorcycle, seized the bike and his mobile phone, and sped off from the scene.
Residents nearby who heard the gunshot rushed out and found the victim lying on the ground in pain. He was later taken to a nearby hospital by good Samaritans, where he is currently receiving treatment. Medical sources said his condition is stable.
The attack has heightened fear among residents of the area, many of whom now avoid moving around at night due to rising cases of robbery and violent crime. Some locals complained that armed robbery has become frequent along poorly lit roads in Makurdi.
A resident who spoke anonymously said criminals now operate freely because of inadequate security patrols. “This is not the first time such an incident has happened here. People are scared, especially commercial motorcycle riders,” the source said.
The Benue State Police Command has not yet released an official statement on the incident. However, security operatives are said to be investigating the attack and searching for the suspects.
Residents have called on the government and security agencies to increase patrols, install more streetlights, and take stronger action against criminal elements to prevent further attacks in the city.
