Astros Injury Updates 2026: Houston Gets Multiple Health Updates After Carlos Correa News
The Houston Astros received several injury updates this week as the team continues its push toward the 2026 MLB postseason.
The biggest news involves Carlos Correa, who will not return this season. Houston manager Joe Espada confirmed that the veteran infielder has ended his attempt to return from left ankle surgery and will instead focus on being fully healthy for 2027.
The Astros also provided updates on several other injured players, including Brice Matthews, Mike Burrows and Steven Okert.
Carlos Correa Ruled Out for the Season
Correa underwent surgery in May to repair a torn peroneus brevis tendon in his left ankle. He had been working toward a September return and was preparing for a possible minor league rehabilitation assignment.
However, soreness increased as he increased his workload. Espada said the daily demands of the rehabilitation process had become too difficult for Correa to continue pushing toward a return this year.
Correa appeared in only 32 games before his injury. He hit .279 with a .369 on-base percentage, three home runs and 16 RBIs during that stretch.
The Astros have now listed his expected return as 2027.
Brice Matthews Continues Rehab
Brice Matthews is another Astros player working his way back.
Matthews has been recovering from a left knee sprain that placed him on the injured list in July. He has already begun a minor league rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land.
According to the Astros’ latest injury report, Matthews has played three rehab games. He has gone 0-for-12 with six strikeouts during those appearances.
The Astros have not announced a specific date for his return to the major league roster.
Mike Burrows Nears Another Bullpen Session
Right-handed pitcher Mike Burrows is also continuing his recovery.
Burrows has been dealing with right elbow neuritis and right shoulder inflammation. He has been out since July while working through the injury.
The Astros said he is scheduled to throw another bullpen session on September 17. His return timetable remains uncertain, however, and the team will continue monitoring his progress.
Steven Okert Working Toward Return
Left-handed reliever Steven Okert is another player moving through the recovery process.
Okert was placed on the injured list in early September with a right hamstring strain. He has started a throwing program but had not yet returned to the mound as of the latest update.
His progress could become important for Houston as the regular season enters its final weeks and the Astros manage their pitching staff.
Astros Continue Their Playoff Push
The injury updates come at an important point in Houston’s season.
The Astros entered Wednesday at 76-75, holding a one-game lead over the Texas Rangers in the American League West. Houston strengthened its position Tuesday by beating the Kansas City Royals 4-2 behind two home runs from Jeremy Peña and another homer from Yordan Alvarez.
With Correa officially ruled out, Houston must continue its postseason push without one of its biggest offseason additions.
The club will now focus on the players who are available while hoping its other injured players can return in time to help during the final stretch of the regular season.
For the Astros, the latest injury report brings a mixture of difficult news and cautious optimism. Correa’s season is over, but Matthews, Burrows and Okert remain on different stages of their respective recoveries.
