Boko Haram chose Buhari as negotiator Jonathan
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has revealed that the terrorist group Boko Haram once selected Muhammadu Buhari as its preferred negotiator during peace talks.
Jonathan made the disclosure while reflecting on the challenges his administration faced in tackling insurgency. According to him, the insurgents named Buhari, who later became president, as the person they trusted to represent them in dialogue with the government.
The former president explained that the development complicated efforts to resolve the crisis, as Boko Haram’s demands and tactics made negotiations extremely difficult. He also emphasized that his administration invested heavily in security but was often undermined by political distractions.
Jonathan’s remarks have reignited debate over Nigeria’s handling of insurgency, with some analysts noting the deep political undertones that shaped security decisions at the time.
Boko Haram’s insurgency, which began over a decade ago, continues to pose serious threats in the Northeast despite military gains.
