Enugu initiative to reduce maternal and infant mortality
The Enugu State Government has launched a new health initiative aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality rates across the state.
Governor Peter Mbah, while unveiling the program in Enugu, said the initiative is designed to strengthen primary healthcare systems, improve access to antenatal services, and provide free delivery care for pregnant women in rural and urban communities.
The programme, which will be implemented through the State Ministry of Health and local government health departments, includes the distribution of medical supplies, recruitment of skilled birth attendants, and the renovation of maternity centres.
Health Commissioner Dr. Emmanuel Ikechukwu Obi noted that the state records hundreds of preventable maternal and neonatal deaths yearly, stressing that the initiative seeks to reverse that trend through better funding and community health education.
Development partners, including UNICEF and WHO, pledged support for the programme, commending Enugu’s commitment to improving women and child health outcomes.
