Dismissed Police Officer Apprehended in Minna for Impersonating Security Personnel, Snatching Motorcycles and Extorting Residents
Minna, Niger State, Nigeria — A dismissed police officer has been arrested in Minna for allegedly impersonating a security personnel, snatching motorcycles and extorting money from unsuspecting residents, police confirmed on Sunday.
The suspect, identified as Haruna Haggai, 30, was apprehended by operatives of the Niger State Police Command following a series of complaints from members of the public about a man posing as a security official and engaging in criminal activities.
According to the police, Haruna — who had previously been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force — used the guise of authority to stop and intimidate civilians, snatching motorcycles and demanding money under threat. Residents reported that he wore parts of a security uniform and convinced victims he had the power to enforce the law, a tactic that facilitated his alleged extortion and theft.
Sources said the arrest followed a coordinated effort by the police after information reached the command that a man fitting the suspect’s description was targeting riders and motorists in various parts of the state capital. Officers on patrol were able to track him down and place him in custody.
“He was arrested and will be detained while investigations continue,” said a police spokesperson. The authorities added that evidence such as snatched motorcycles and other items are being examined as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Impersonation of security personnel is a recurring challenge in Nigeria, with past incidents involving individuals posing as police or other security agents to defraud or intimidate the public.
Police have warned residents to be vigilant and to always verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a security officer, especially those without proper credentials or official identification. The force also encouraged the public to report suspicious behaviour to law enforcement immediately.
