Ekiti Spends N49.7 Billion on Airport Project, Begins Commercial Flights
The Ekiti State Government has announced that it spent N49.7 billion on the construction and outfitting of the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport, which has officially commenced commercial flight operations. The announcement was made on December 10, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructure and transportation development.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji stated that prior administrations had invested approximately N14 billion in site clearing, initial runway construction, and regulatory approvals. His administration added over N34 billion over the past three years to complete civil works, install modern navigational and safety equipment, and ensure full regulatory compliance.
The airport recently received approval from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to begin scheduled commercial flights. The first commercial flight, operated by United Nigeria Airlines, successfully transported passengers from Abuja to the airport before continuing to Lagos, signaling the start of full commercial operations.
The facility now boasts an international-standard runway, modern terminal building, control tower, and necessary navigational aids. Plans are underway to install an Instrument Landing System (ILS) that will enable 24-hour and night operations, making the airport one of the few in southwestern Nigeria equipped for round-the-clock flights.
Officials believe that the fully operational airport will stimulate economic growth in Ekiti State by boosting trade, especially in agro-allied products, improving connectivity for residents and businesses, and attracting investment into the state. The development is expected to enhance the state’s position as a regional hub for commerce and transportation.
