The Anambra Kidnapping Ruse: Arrests Made in Shocking Fraud Case
On August 30, 2025, the Anambra State Police Command arrested 23-year-old Nmesoma Josephine Nwoye and her 24-year-old boyfriend, Chibuike Ogbu, for staging a fake kidnapping to extort money from Nwoye’s family.
The couple initially demanded ₦15 million in ransom, but after negotiations, the family transferred ₦3 million to Nwoye’s account, believing she was in danger. Intelligence-led operations by the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu uncovered the scheme, leading to the suspects’ arrest and the recovery of ₦1.2 million of the ransom paid.
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the act as a sign of “moral decay” among youths, urging parents and guardians to instill discipline and values. The suspects are in custody, and investigations are ongoing to ensure justice.
