FG, Islamic Bank Strengthen Partnership on Key Road Projects
The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) have renewed their commitment to accelerating the completion of major road infrastructure projects across the country through enhanced funding and technical collaboration.
The reaffirmed partnership was announced following a high-level meeting between the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, and an IsDB delegation in Abuja, where both parties reviewed ongoing joint projects and discussed strategies to ensure timely delivery.
Umahi lauded the Bank’s long-standing support for Nigeria’s infrastructure development, noting that the partnership has been pivotal in driving progress on several strategic routes, including the Kano–Maiduguri, Zaria–Sokoto, and Lagos–Ibadan expressway corridors.
“The Islamic Development Bank has been a reliable partner in Nigeria’s infrastructural transformation agenda. Our collaboration is yielding tangible results in connecting states, boosting trade, and improving road safety,” Umahi said.
He emphasized that the Federal Government remains committed to transparency, accountability, and sustainability in managing all donor-funded projects, adding that new monitoring mechanisms have been introduced to prevent delays and cost overruns.
The IsDB Country Operations Manager, Dr. Mohammed S. Boulahya, praised Nigeria’s commitment to infrastructure expansion and expressed the Bank’s readiness to deepen its involvement in the country’s transportation and energy sectors.
“We are particularly impressed with the progress recorded under the new project supervision framework. IsDB will continue to support Nigeria with concessional financing, capacity building, and technical assistance to ensure that these projects are completed and serve their intended purpose,” Boulahya said.
The renewed partnership will also explore green road construction technologies and public-private partnerships (PPPs) to improve environmental sustainability and attract more investment into Nigeria’s road sector.
