FG Issues Warning Against Money Bouquet Practice Before Valentine’s Day
The Federal Government has warned Nigerians against the use of money bouquets ahead of Valentine’s Day celebrations, stressing that the practice constitutes abuse of the national currency.
In a statement issued ahead of February 14, authorities reminded citizens that arranging naira notes into decorative bouquets or gift displays violates existing laws that prohibit currency mutilation and improper handling of the naira.
Officials noted that while Valentine’s Day is widely celebrated as a day of love and gift-giving, Nigerians must ensure that their celebrations do not involve actions that disrespect the country’s legal tender. The government emphasized that the naira is a national symbol and must be treated with dignity.
According to the warning, practices such as spraying, stapling, tearing, defacing, or using currency notes for decorative purposes — including money bouquets — fall under acts considered as currency abuse. Offenders risk fines or other penalties as stipulated by law.
The renewed advisory comes amid the growing popularity of money bouquets and customized cash gifts, particularly during festive occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and Valentine’s Day. Social media trends have further fueled the demand for elaborate currency displays.
Authorities urged Nigerians to explore alternative gift options that do not involve mishandling cash. They also called on event planners, vendors, and content creators to discourage practices that could lead to legal consequences.
Financial experts have supported the warning, noting that currency mutilation increases the cost of printing new notes and affects the lifespan of money in circulation. They stressed the importance of preserving the integrity of the naira.
The Federal Government reiterated that enforcement agencies would continue to monitor compliance and take necessary action where violations occur.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, Nigerians have been advised to celebrate responsibly and ensure that expressions of love and affection remain within the bounds of the law.
