Five Civilians and Soldier Killed in Bandit Attack on Plateau Communities
Jos, Plateau State — At least five residents and one soldier have been killed following a coordinated attack by armed bandits on several communities in Plateau State, Nigeria. The attack has raised renewed concerns about insecurity in the region.
Eyewitnesses said the bandits stormed the communities late in the evening, opening fire on residents and targeting local security personnel. The assailants were heavily armed and moved quickly, creating panic among villagers who attempted to flee.
Local authorities confirmed that a soldier assigned to a nearby military post was killed while attempting to repel the attackers. Five civilians, including men and women, also lost their lives during the incident, with several others reported injured. Victims were rushed to local health facilities for treatment.
The Plateau State Police Command said reinforcements were immediately dispatched to the affected communities. “Our officers, alongside military personnel, are conducting operations to apprehend the perpetrators and secure the communities,” a spokesperson stated.
Residents called on the government to provide better protection and increase security presence in rural areas, citing repeated attacks by bandits in recent months. “We live in fear every day,” one villager said. “We need security agencies to be more proactive to stop these attacks.”
Banditry and armed attacks have become a major security challenge in Plateau and neighboring states, often involving kidnappings, looting, and killings. Authorities have intensified patrols and joint military-police operations, but the perpetrators continue to exploit remote areas.
The state government has promised to support the affected families and provide humanitarian assistance to victims of the attack. Investigations are ongoing, and security agencies have urged residents to report suspicious activities promptly to prevent further attacks.
