Islamic Cleric Killed by Bandits in Zamfara, Community Mourns Amid Insecurity Crisis
Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed an Islamic cleric in Zamfara State, deepening concerns over the persistent insecurity plaguing parts of northwest Nigeria. The incident reportedly occurred after the cleric was kidnapped and a ransom was paid for his release.
The victim, identified as Alhaji Zainu Mada, was abducted by suspected bandits along the Kotorkoshi–Mada Road in Gusau Local Government Area several days before his death. After demanding and collecting a ransom of N2 million, a motorcycle, and approximately N70,000 in phone recharge cards from his family, the attackers went on to kill the cleric and informed the family to collect his body.
Local government authorities expressed shock and dismay at the killing. Abubakar Imam, Chairman of Gusau Local Government Area, visited the family to offer condolences and condemned the act as tragic and unacceptable. He was joined by Ibrahim Liman, a legislator representing Gusau II Constituency in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, who also sympathised with the bereaved family.
The funeral prayer for Alhaji Mada was held in his hometown, Mada town, where hundreds of residents gathered to pay their respects and mourn the loss. The area has reported repeated bandit attacks in recent times, with residents frequently targeted for kidnappings and extortion.
Security agencies in Zamfara have yet to issue a detailed public statement on the incident. Efforts to reach the police command’s spokesperson were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
This violent episode comes amid wider efforts by the Nigerian military and security forces to clamp down on criminal armed groups in the northwest. In recent operations in Zamfara and neighbouring states, troops have freed hostages and engaged militants in efforts to curb kidnappings, banditry, and related violence.
Despite these operations, communities across the region continue to experience attacks, abductions, and killings, underscoring the ongoing challenge of restoring security in parts of northwest Nigeria. Local residents and leaders have repeatedly called on government authorities to intensify measures to protect civilians and dismantle criminal networks responsible for the insecurity.
