Kwankwaso denies APC defection rumours
Former Kano State governor and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has denied rumours suggesting he plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking through his media aide, Kwankwaso dismissed the reports as political propaganda, stressing that he remains committed to strengthening the NNPP and building a credible alternative for Nigerians.
“Our leader has no intention of joining the APC. These rumours are being spread by political opponents who are threatened by his growing influence,” the statement read.
Kwankwaso, who finished fourth in the 2023 presidential election, has continued to position himself as a key opposition figure. His recent meetings with stakeholders in the North had fueled speculation about possible realignments.
Political analysts say the denial may calm tensions within the NNPP, where members feared his exit could weaken the party’s grassroots strength in Kano and other northern states.
Observers, however, note that with Nigeria’s fast-shifting political landscape, alliances and defections remain possible as the 2027 race draws closer.
