NDDC Hands Over New Naval Base to Boost Bayelsa Security
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has officially handed over a newly completed naval base to the Nigerian Navy in Bayelsa State, as part of efforts to strengthen maritime security and safeguard oil and gas infrastructure in the Niger Delta region.
The facility, located along the Nembe waterways, is designed to enhance the Navy’s operational capacity to combat oil theft, sea piracy, illegal bunkering, and other criminal activities that have long plagued the region’s coastal communities.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, NDDC Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku said the project demonstrates the Commission’s commitment to supporting national security and fostering sustainable development in the Niger Delta.
“Security and development go hand in hand. Without safety in our waterways and communities, investments and progress cannot thrive. This naval base is part of our strategy to ensure peace, stability, and protection of national assets in the region,” Ogbuku said.
He added that the facility is equipped with modern operational offices, accommodation blocks, communication systems, and patrol jetty infrastructure to support 24-hour surveillance and response operations.
Receiving the project on behalf of the Nigerian Navy, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral Olusegun Ferreira, commended the NDDC for its foresight and partnership with the military, noting that the base would significantly boost maritime patrol and response capacity.
“This new base will help us intensify operations against oil thieves and criminal elements operating in the creeks. It is a critical asset that will enhance the Navy’s presence and ability to safeguard our maritime domain,” Ferreira stated.
Local leaders and community representatives who attended the event also praised the initiative, describing it as a “welcome development” that would bring both economic stability and peace to the area.
Background
Bayelsa, one of Nigeria’s most oil-rich states, has in recent years witnessed increased incidents of pipeline vandalism and illegal crude refining, leading to revenue losses and environmental damage. The establishment of the naval base is expected to serve as a deterrent and promote safer navigation for local fishermen and oil companies.
