Niger Gov Donates ₦1 Million Each to Families of Tanker Explosion Victims
The Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umar Bago, has announced a ₦1 million compensation for each family affected by the recent tanker explosion in the state, which claimed several lives and left many others injured.
The tragic incident occurred last week along the Lapai-Minna Road, when a petrol-laden tanker lost control and exploded, engulfing nearby vehicles and bystanders in flames. The inferno reportedly resulted in multiple fatalities and extensive property damage.
Governor Bago Commiserates with Victims’ Families
During his visit to the General Hospital, Lapai, where several victims are receiving treatment, Governor Bago expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured the affected families of the government’s full support.
“This is a deeply painful tragedy for all of us in Niger State. We have lost precious lives, and no amount of money can replace them. However, we will do everything possible to support the victims’ families and ensure those injured receive the best medical care,” Bago said.
He directed the Ministry of Health to cover all medical expenses for the injured and promised that the state government would partner with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to enhance safety measures along major highways to prevent future occurrences.
Government to Strengthen Road Safety, Emergency Response
The governor also announced plans to establish a Rapid Emergency Response Unit to handle road accidents, fire outbreaks, and other disasters more effectively.
“We are working to improve our emergency response system. This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter regulations on the movement of petroleum tankers and better road safety enforcement,” he added.
Survivors Receive Free Treatment
Officials at the hospital confirmed that survivors were receiving free medical treatment, including surgeries for burns and trauma. Medical personnel said several victims were in stable condition, while others remained in intensive care.
Community Leaders Commend Government Support
Community leaders in Lapai expressed gratitude to the state government for the swift response and financial aid, calling it a “gesture of compassion and leadership.”
“The governor’s visit has given our people comfort. We pray such tragedies do not happen again,” said Alhaji Musa Lapai, a traditional leader in the area.

The tanker explosion, which occurred on Lapai-Minna Road, is one of several such incidents recorded in recent years in Nigeria, often caused by poor vehicle maintenance, reckless driving, or bad road conditions.
The Niger State Government has since ordered a comprehensive review of tanker operations across the state to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
