Nigerian Government Issues Travel and Safety Warning for Nigerians in Iran and Gulf States
The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued an urgent travel and safety warning to Nigerian citizens residing in or visiting the Iran and several Gulf states as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate.
In a statement released on February 28, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria said it is “closely monitoring the evolving and volatile situation” in the region following reported military action by United States and Israel against targets in Iran and subsequent retaliatory activity by Iranian forces that has affected parts of neighbouring Gulf countries.
The advisory, signed by ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, urged Nigerians in affected areas to be “extremely vigilant and conscious of their surroundings at all times.” Citizens were specifically told to avoid locations known to be strategic, military or government installations — sites that could become flashpoints amid the conflict.
Recognising the heightened risk posed by the volatile security environment, the statement strongly recommended that Nigerians restrict non-essential movement and travel within their host countries until the situation stabilises. Large gatherings, public demonstrations and areas where tensions could flare were described as places to be avoided for personal safety.
The advisory also stressed the importance of complying with the safety directives issued by local authorities and remaining aware of official security guidance in each country of residence. Those affected were encouraged to stay informed through reputable local and international news outlets and to be cautious of misinformation circulating on social media.
With Nigeria’s diplomatic missions on heightened alert, the government reaffirmed that Nigerian embassies and consular offices in Tehran, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are ready to provide assistance and facilitate communication as needed. Citizens were reminded that their safety and well-being remain a top priority for the Federal Government.
The advisory comes amid airstrikes on Iranian cities and reported retaliatory missile and drone attacks on U.S. and allied interests in the Gulf, which have already led to airspace closures, international flight diversions and travel disruptions across the region.
In addition to urging vigilance, the Federal Government called on all parties involved in the conflict to pursue diplomatic solutions and de-escalation in the interests of global peace and stability. It said peaceful negotiations should be prioritised to prevent further loss of life and rising tensions that could impact civilian populations, including foreign nationals like Nigerians living abroad.
Nigeria’s security warning reflects broader international concern over the Middle East conflict, with other governments also issuing travel advisories and urging citizens to reconsider non-essential travel to the region.
As the situation continues to develop, Nigerian citizens abroad are being closely monitored by foreign missions, with additional updates expected from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure timely and accurate guidance.
