One Killed in Cult Clash at Kwara Market as Rival Groups Engage in Violent Fight
Tension gripped a busy market in Kwara State after a violent clash between suspected rival cult groups left one person dead and several others injured. The incident reportedly occurred during trading hours, sending traders and customers running for safety as chaos erupted in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the clash broke out when members of two rival cult groups confronted each other inside the market. What initially began as a heated argument quickly escalated into violence, with the suspects reportedly using dangerous weapons to attack one another.
Traders said the sudden outbreak of violence caused panic as people abandoned their stalls and fled the market premises to avoid being caught in the crossfire. Some shop owners hurriedly shut their stores while others sought shelter in nearby buildings.
Residents in the area reported hearing loud shouts and seeing young men chasing one another with weapons before the situation spiraled out of control. In the process, one person was fatally wounded while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The victim, whose identity had not been officially confirmed at the time of filing this report, was said to have been rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Security operatives from the Nigeria Police Force were later deployed to the scene following distress calls from residents and traders. Officers reportedly restored calm to the area and began an investigation to identify those involved in the attack.
Police authorities said efforts are ongoing to track down the suspects responsible for the violence. Some individuals believed to be connected to the clash have reportedly fled the area to avoid arrest.
A police spokesperson in the state assured residents that the situation had been brought under control and urged members of the public to remain calm while investigations continue.
“We are currently investigating the incident and making efforts to apprehend those responsible for the violence. Anyone with useful information should come forward to assist the police,” the spokesperson said.
