Opposition lawmakers joining APC out of patriotism – Akpabio
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has said that recent defections by opposition lawmakers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are driven by patriotism and a shared desire to support President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda, not by political opportunism.
Akpabio made the statement while addressing journalists at the National Assembly complex in Abuja on Monday, following a series of high-profile defections from opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP).
“What we are witnessing is not about politics but about patriotism,” Akpabio said.
“Many lawmakers from other parties have come to realize that this administration needs national support to succeed. They are joining hands with the APC because they believe in the Renewed Hope vision of President Bola Tinubu.”
Lawmakers defecting for stability, not power – Akpabio
The Senate President dismissed claims that the ruling party was poaching members of the opposition to weaken Nigeria’s multi-party system, insisting that the defections reflected the lawmakers’ commitment to national unity, stability, and progress.
“We cannot afford to politicize governance at this critical time. What Nigeria needs are leaders who are willing to set aside personal interests for the good of the nation,” he said.
“Those joining the APC are not doing so for selfish reasons but because they see that the administration is focused on delivering results.”
He noted that the country’s current challenges — including economic reforms, security concerns, and infrastructure development — require broad-based cooperation among all political actors.

Akpabio, who described the APC as a progressive platform open to all Nigerians, said the ruling party welcomes members from any political background who are ready to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s growth.
“The APC is not closing its doors to anyone. We are a party that believes in inclusion and dialogue. Anyone who wants to serve Nigeria sincerely is welcome,” he stated.
He further praised President Tinubu’s leadership style, describing it as inclusive, reform-minded, and responsive to the needs of the people.
Reactions from opposition camps
Meanwhile, some opposition lawmakers have criticized the wave of defections, alleging that the ruling party is using political inducements and pressure to lure members.
However, Akpabio dismissed such allegations, saying the National Assembly remains independent and guided by constitutional principles.
“Nobody is being coerced. In a democracy, lawmakers have the right to associate freely. What matters is that their decisions reflect the will of their constituents,” he maintained.
National consensus over politics
Political analysts say the trend of cross-party alignment could shape the dynamics of Nigeria’s legislature ahead of the 2027 general elections.
They note that the Senate President’s emphasis on patriotism signals a growing push for governance unity over partisan rivalry, particularly as the Tinubu administration continues its series of economic and structural reforms.
Akpabio reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the 10th National Assembly remains a strong pillar of democracy and a reliable partner in advancing national development.
“We are all here to serve Nigeria, regardless of our party colors. Patriotism must always come before politics,” he concluded.
