The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commenced a five-day warning strike across hospitals in Nigeria starting today, over unresolved issues with the Federal Government.
The doctors say the industrial action became necessary after repeated attempts to address their demands were ignored. Among the grievances are unpaid salary arrears, poor working conditions, lack of adequate equipment, and the government’s failure to implement agreements reached in previous negotiations.
Hospitals nationwide are expected to experience disruptions in services, particularly in teaching hospitals and federal medical centres where resident doctors make up the bulk of the workforce. Emergency and critical care units are likely to be the worst affected.
NARD leaders stressed that the strike is only a warning, but warned that a full-scale indefinite strike could follow if the government fails to act. They also urged Nigerians to hold authorities accountable for the state of the health sector rather than blaming medical professionals.
The Ministry of Health has yet to issue an official response as negotiations are expected to continue in the coming days.
