Senate Confirms Oyewole as Justice of the Supreme Court
The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court, following his nomination by President Bola Tinubu. The confirmation came after the upper legislative chamber considered and adopted the report of its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.
Oyewole’s confirmation followed a screening exercise during which lawmakers examined his credentials, career, and suitability for appointment to the apex court. Senators who spoke during the plenary described him as a seasoned jurist with vast experience in the legal profession.
The Senate President put the confirmation to a voice vote after the committee’s report was presented, with lawmakers unanimously approving the nomination. The confirmation brings the total number of justices on the Supreme Court bench closer to the constitutionally required strength.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary noted that Oyewole met all constitutional requirements for the appointment and had demonstrated integrity, competence, and deep knowledge of the law throughout his judicial career.
The appointment is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the Supreme Court, which has faced challenges related to a heavy workload and a shortage of justices. Legal experts have repeatedly called for timely appointments to ensure speedy dispensation of justice and reduce case backlogs at the apex court.
With his confirmation, Oyewole is expected to be sworn in by the Chief Justice of Nigeria in the coming days, after which he will formally assume duties as a Justice of the Supreme Court.
