Toney and Mensah Shatter Miami Records in 45-6 Blowout Win Over Stanford
Malachi Toney and Darian Mensah gave Miami fans plenty to celebrate in the Hurricanes’ season opener, combining for a record-setting performance in a dominant 45-6 victory over Stanford on Friday night.
The seventh-ranked Hurricanes wasted little time showing why expectations are high for the 2026 season. Mensah threw five touchdown passes in his Miami debut, while Toney broke the school’s single-game receiving record with 234 yards.
The performance gave Miami an explosive start to its campaign and immediately created excitement around the new quarterback-receiver partnership.
Toney Breaks Miami Receiving Record
Toney was the biggest star of the night.
The sophomore wide receiver caught 12 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns. His receiving total surpassed the previous Miami record of 220 yards, set by Eddie Brown in 1984.
Toney also tied Miami’s single-game record for touchdown receptions with three.
His final touchdown was particularly memorable. Toney caught a 47-yard pass from Mensah in the third quarter, pushing him beyond Brown’s longstanding receiving mark.
Toney celebrated his touchdowns with the Heisman Trophy pose, making it clear that he has major ambitions for the season.

The former Duke quarterback completed 27 of 30 passes for 401 yards and five touchdowns in his first game wearing a Miami uniform.
His performance established Miami records for passing yards and touchdown passes in a debut.
Mensah arrived in Coral Gables after leading Duke to the ACC championship the previous season. He threw for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns during his final year with the Blue Devils.
Against Stanford, he immediately demonstrated why Miami made him one of its most important offseason additions.
His first pass of the game went 48 yards to Toney, setting the tone for everything that followed.
Toney and Mensah Connect Immediately
The chemistry between the two players was obvious from the opening drive.
Mensah found Toney for a 23-yard touchdown to give Miami an early lead.
The pair connected again on Miami’s next possession, this time for a two-yard touchdown.
They later reunited for the 47-yard touchdown that allowed Toney to break the school’s receiving record.
The early connection between the two stars could become one of the most important storylines in Miami’s season.

Daylyn Upshaw caught a touchdown pass in the second quarter, while Duke transfer Cooper Barkate added another receiving touchdown in the third quarter.
CharMar Brown also scored on a five-yard rushing touchdown.
By halftime, Miami had built a 28-6 advantage.
The Hurricanes added two more touchdowns in the third quarter before a fourth-quarter field goal completed the scoring.
Stanford managed only two field goals and could not find the end zone against Miami’s defense.
A Statement Win for the Hurricanes
The 45-6 victory was more than a comfortable opening win.
It was a statement from a Miami team entering the season with national championship expectations.
The Hurricanes reached the national championship game last season and returned with several key players while also adding important transfers.
Mensah was one of the biggest additions.

For Stanford, the result was a difficult reminder of the gap between the Cardinal and one of the nation’s top-ranked teams.
Stanford quarterback Davis Warren completed 20 passes for 214 yards, but the Cardinal struggled to sustain drives against Miami.
Stanford’s offense managed only six points, while the defense struggled to contain the Hurricanes’ passing attack.
The loss dropped Stanford to 1-1 on the season.
Miami, meanwhile, moved to 1-0 and immediately strengthened its position among the teams expected to compete at the highest level of college football.
A New Miami Duo Emerges
The biggest takeaway from the game may be the connection between Toney and Mensah.
Toney entered the season already regarded as one of Miami’s most important offensive players. Mensah arrived with major expectations after his successful season at Duke.
Together, they produced one of the most impressive opening-night performances in the country.
