Two men have been confirmed dead in a Cross River community after a violent confrontation over plantain escalated into a deadly machete duel.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has left residents in shock and sparked renewed calls for conflict-resolution mechanisms in rural areas.
According to eyewitness accounts, the two men—described as long-time acquaintances—got into a heated argument over the ownership of bunches of plantain harvested earlier in the day. What began as a verbal exchange quickly deteriorated into a physical fight after both men reportedly grabbed machetes.
Witnesses said the confrontation turned brutal within minutes, with each man striking the other repeatedly. Efforts by neighbors to intervene proved unsuccessful as the men were already severely injured before help could reach them.
Both individuals collapsed at the scene and were later pronounced dead as a result of deep machete cuts.
“It all happened so fast,” a resident said. “Before we knew it, they were cutting each other. Nobody expected the issue of plantain to reach this level.”
