Why Manager Amorim Faces a Critical Season After Club’s £200M Signings
Wayne Rooney has issued a stern warning to Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, stating that there are “no excuses” for underperformance this season after the club invested £200 million in new signings, including Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo. Speaking on his BBC podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney expressed concern over United’s poor start to the 2025-26 Premier League season, with only one point from their first two matches—a 1-0 loss to Arsenal and a 1-1 draw against Fulham.
This follows a dismal 2024-25 season where United finished 15th, their worst-ever Premier League campaign. Rooney emphasized that Amorim, who took over from Erik ten Hag in November 2024, must deliver results quickly, as persistent issues from last season are resurfacing, and pressure will mount by October or November if performance doesn’t improve.
Despite the signings boosting optimism, as noted by player Patrick Dorgu, Rooney questioned Amorim’s long-term suitability, citing ongoing tactical issues and lack of progress.
