Asian Man Recounts How Police Complaint Unit Helped Recover N150,000 Extorted by Officer in Lagos
An Asian man living in Nigeria has narrated how he was able to recover N150,000 allegedly extorted from him by a police officer after filing a report with the Police Complaint Response Unit (PCRU).
The man, who shared his experience on social media, explained that the incident happened while he was returning from an outing when a police officer stopped him for what he described as a routine check. According to him, the officer accused him of violating unspecified rules and threatened to detain him if he did not pay a sum of money immediately.
Feeling intimidated and unfamiliar with the legal procedures, he said he reluctantly transferred N150,000 to the officer. After the encounter, he reached out to friends who encouraged him to report the incident to the Police Complaint Response Unit.
He noted that the PCRU responded swiftly, collecting details of the officer involved and the transaction. The unit reportedly traced the officer, investigated the complaint, and facilitated the refund of the full amount. The man expressed surprise at how quickly the matter was resolved, describing the recovery as “evidence that some parts of the Nigerian police system are working.”
He went on to commend the PCRU for their professionalism, transparency, and willingness to follow up on the case. He also advised members of the public—especially foreigners unfamiliar with the system—to always report any form of police misconduct rather than staying silent.
The PCRU has increasingly encouraged citizens to make use of its online and telephone platforms to report harassment, extortion, or excessive force by officers. Police authorities have repeatedly stated their commitment to reform and cleaning up the force by disciplining officers involved in corruption or abuse of power.
The incident has generated public reactions, with many commending the man for speaking up and encouraging others to document and report similar cases. Others expressed hope that such actions will gradually reduce extortion and rebuild trust between police personnel and the public.
