ECOWAS blue economy strategy
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced the revival of its regional blue economy strategy, aimed at harnessing the economic potential of the Atlantic Ocean and other water resources across West Africa.
The strategy, unveiled in Abuja, will focus on sustainable fisheries, maritime trade, coastal tourism, renewable energy, and environmental protection. Officials say it is designed to create jobs, strengthen food security, and enhance regional integration.
“The blue economy is a critical growth frontier for our region. By investing in our oceans and waterways, we can drive prosperity while protecting marine resources for future generations,” an ECOWAS commissioner said.
Experts note that West Africa’s coastline, stretching over 6,000 km, remains underutilized despite its vast potential to contribute billions of dollars to GDP.
The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with member states, the African Union, and international development partners, ensuring alignment with global climate and ocean sustainability goals.
