FG flood warning Lagos and 13 states
The Federal Government has issued a fresh warning of possible flooding in Lagos and 13 other states, urging residents to take precautionary measures.
The alert was contained in a statement released by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), which said heavy rainfall and the release of excess water from dams could trigger flooding in vulnerable areas.
According to NEMA, the states at risk include Lagos, Ogun, Anambra, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Kogi, Benue, Niger, Nasarawa, Kebbi, and Sokoto.
The agency advised state governments to activate emergency response plans, clear drainages, and sensitize communities in flood-prone areas. Residents were also urged to move to higher ground and avoid risky crossings during heavy rainfall.
Experts warn that climate change, urban congestion, and poor waste management are worsening Nigeria’s flooding challenges, which have displaced thousands and caused billions in damages in recent years.
NEMA assured that it is working with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and other stakeholders to monitor the situation and provide timely updates.
