Goods Worth Millions Destroyed as Fire Guts Building in Lagos’ Computer Village
Lagos, Nigeria — A major fire outbreak on Monday morning ravaged a commercial building in Computer Village, Ikeja, destroying goods worth millions of naira and sending traders into panic as thick smoke engulfed the busy tech hub.
The inferno reportedly began around 6:30 a.m., before most shops fully opened for business. Witnesses said they noticed smoke coming from the upper section of a building located along one of the market’s densely packed streets. Within minutes, flames spread across several retail spaces stocked with phones, laptop accessories, SIM cards, chargers, and other high-value electronics.
Traders and early-morning buyers scrambled for safety as attempts were made to salvage anything that could be pulled out of the burning building. Some shop owners broke down in tears while watching helplessly as their investments went up in flames.
Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene shortly after distress calls were made. Firefighters worked for hours to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to adjoining buildings—an outcome many feared due to the area’s tight layout and the huge concentration of electronic flammable materials.
According to preliminary reports from emergency authorities, no lives were lost, but the level of destruction was “substantial,” with several shops completely burnt and goods valued in the millions of naira destroyed.
The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, though traders told reporters they suspect it may have been triggered by an overnight electrical fault. Officials say a full investigation will be conducted to determine what sparked the inferno.
Many affected shop owners expressed deep frustration, explaining that the loss is especially heartbreaking due to the high cost of electronics and the upcoming sales season. Some said they had just stocked up new items over the weekend, hoping for increased sales.
“This is my entire livelihood,” one shop owner lamented. “Everything is gone. I don’t even know how to start again.”
Leaders of the Computer Village business community have appealed to the Lagos State Government for support, stressing the need for more fire hydrants, better electrical regulation, and strict enforcement of safety standards in the market.
They also urged shop owners to invest in fire extinguishers and proper wiring to prevent future incidents.
A spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency confirmed that rescue operations have concluded and assured that further updates would be provided once investigations are completed.
