‘I’m Still Governor of Rivers’ — Fubara Speaks Amid Impeachment Proceedings
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has publicly declared that he remains the governor of the state despite ongoing efforts by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach him and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu. Fubara made the remarks on Saturday while addressing supporters at the finale of the 2026 NPA Port Harcourt International Polo Tournament in the state capital.
During his speech, the governor downplayed the impeachment notice issued by the Assembly, referring to it as a “love letter” and expressing confidence that it would not derail his administration’s agenda. He stressed that the peaceful conclusion of the week-long polo event demonstrated that Rivers State remains stable and safe under his leadership.
Fubara urged residents to ignore misleading narratives on social media, emphasizing his continued commitment to fulfilling the promises made to the people of Rivers State. He said the safety of lives and property and the ongoing work of his government were his top priorities.
The impeachment process — driven by lawmakers accusing the governor’s administration of gross misconduct — has generated significant political tension and division within the state. A Rivers State High Court earlier issued an interim order restraining further steps toward impeachment, temporarily halting the process.
