Jonathan Taylor Thomas Arrested After California Traffic Stop
Former Home Improvement star Jonathan Taylor Thomas was arrested in California after a traffic stop that reportedly turned into a confrontation with deputies.
The actor, 45, was a passenger in a vehicle stopped in Westlake Village early Monday, September 21, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities said deputies were conducting a DUI investigation involving the driver when Thomas allegedly became involved.
According to law enforcement, deputies noticed the vehicle blocking traffic at an intersection. The driver reportedly appeared to be intoxicated, prompting deputies to investigate the situation.
Jonathan Taylor Thomas Allegedly Left the Vehicle
Authorities said Thomas was sitting in the passenger seat when deputies began the investigation.
According to the sheriff’s department, Thomas appeared intoxicated and was instructed to remain inside the vehicle. Officials allege that he repeatedly got out of the car and approached deputies while they were dealing with the traffic stop.
The sheriff’s department said his actions distracted deputies from their investigation.
Authorities then attempted to detain Thomas on suspicion of obstruction and public intoxication. Police reports cited by multiple outlets also allege that Thomas kicked a deputy in the stomach during the encounter.
The allegations have not been independently established in court. Thomas has not publicly commented on the incident.
Actor Was Booked and Later Released
Thomas was taken to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station, where he was booked on suspicion of obstruction and public intoxication.
Jail records showed that he was later released from custody. NBC Los Angeles reported that the case is expected to be presented to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of criminal charges.
The Independent reported that no charges had been filed against Thomas or the driver at the time of its report. The sheriff’s department is expected to submit the case to prosecutors, who will determine whether formal charges should be filed.
The driver of the vehicle was also arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Jonathan Taylor Thomas Became a 1990s Star
The arrest comes more than two decades after Thomas became one of the most recognizable young actors on American television.
He rose to fame as Randy Taylor on the hit ABC sitcom Home Improvement. The series starred Tim Allen as Tim Taylor and ran from 1991 to 1999.
Thomas also became known to a younger generation through his voice role as young Simba in Disney’s 1994 animated film The Lion King. He later appeared in movies including Man of the House, Tom and Huck and I’ll Be Home for Christmas.
Despite his early success, Thomas eventually stepped away from Hollywood. He previously explained that he wanted to focus on education, travel and having a break from the intense schedule that came with being a child star.
Thomas Has Kept a Low Profile
In recent years, Thomas has largely stayed away from the entertainment spotlight.
However, he made headlines earlier in 2026 after reuniting with former Home Improvement co-stars Patricia Richardson and Taran Noah Smith. The reunion gave fans a rare glimpse of the actor years after he left the center of Hollywood attention.
His latest appearance in the news is now connected to the California traffic-stop incident.
For now, the allegations remain part of an ongoing law enforcement case. Prosecutors will determine whether formal criminal charges should be filed. Thomas has not publicly addressed the allegations or the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
