Lagos food prices soaring traders residents
Traders and residents in Lagos State are raising concerns over the soaring prices of food items, which they say have made daily survival increasingly difficult.
From major markets like Mile 12, Balogun, and Oyingbo, to neighborhood shops, the cost of staple foods such as rice, beans, yam, garri, and tomatoes has skyrocketed in recent weeks.
“A bag of rice that sold for ₦52,000 two months ago now goes for nearly ₦70,000. Customers are complaining, but we also buy at high costs from suppliers,” said Rukayat Sulaimon, a rice dealer at Mile 12.
Residents say the situation has forced many households to reduce meal portions or switch to cheaper alternatives, while traders lament that low patronage is affecting their profits.
Economic analysts attribute the surge to high transportation costs, inflation, and supply chain disruptions, warning that the situation could worsen if urgent interventions are not made.
The Federal and Lagos State governments have pledged to roll out measures to stabilize prices, but citizens remain skeptical about how quickly relief will come.
