Nigeria porous borders peace security
Former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, has warned that Nigeria’s porous borders remain one of the greatest threats to the nation’s peace and security.
Speaking at a security summit in Abuja, Gana expressed concern that unchecked movements across the country’s borders have enabled the smuggling of arms, infiltration by terrorists, and rising cases of cross-border crimes.
“A nation without secured borders cannot guarantee peace, development, or security. Nigeria must take urgent steps to strengthen its border management systems,” he said.
He stressed the need for modern surveillance technology, stronger collaboration with neighboring countries, and improved welfare for security personnel stationed at border posts.
Security experts at the summit backed Gana’s concerns, noting that banditry, insurgency, and illicit trade continue to thrive because of weak border control. They called for urgent policy reforms and investment in technology such as drones, biometric systems, and satellite monitoring.
The warning comes amid rising insecurity across the country, with stakeholders urging the Federal Government to prioritize border protection as part of its national security strategy.
