“I Am Depressed” — President Tinubu Mourns Abduction of Schoolgirls and Killing of Soldiers
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sadness over the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the killing of Nigerian soldiers in a separate attack. He described the incidents as heartbreaking and said the tragedies had left him “depressed.”
The president has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to Kebbi State to meet with government officials, parents, and affected communities. Shettima is expected to reassure families that the federal government is fully committed to rescuing the schoolgirls and ensuring their safe return.
Tinubu also mourned the soldiers who were killed while confronting insurgents. Among the fallen was a senior military officer whose death the president described as a painful loss to the nation. He extended condolences to the families of the victims and praised the bravery of the troops who continue to risk their lives in defence of the country.
The president revealed that he had been briefed thoroughly by military authorities on both incidents. He expressed frustration that the abduction of the schoolgirls occurred despite prior intelligence warnings, calling it a serious security failure. Tinubu also commended the efforts made by Kebbi State Governor Mohammed Nasir Idris before the attack and said the breach was both shocking and unacceptable.
He called on communities—especially those in areas vulnerable to attacks—to work closely with security forces by sharing intelligence and reporting suspicious activity. According to him, lasting security can only be achieved when citizens and the military cooperate effectively.
Tinubu concluded by urging security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the girls and prevent further attacks. He also prayed for comfort for the families who have lost loved ones, stressing that the country must stand united in the face of growing insecurity.
