Umuahia Road Crash: Man Says God Told Him to Alight Before Accident That Killed 15 Traders
A survivor of the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of 15 traders from Umuahia has narrated how he escaped death after allegedly receiving a divine instruction to alight from the bus moments before the crash occurred.
The accident reportedly happened as the traders were returning from a wedding ceremony held outside Umuahia. The victims were said to be travelling in a commercial bus when the vehicle was involved in a serious crash along a major highway in Abia State.
According to eyewitness accounts, the bus lost control and collided with another vehicle before bursting into flames. Most of the passengers reportedly died on the spot, while a few others sustained severe injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
One of the men who was originally part of the journey later shared his testimony, stating that he suddenly felt compelled to get down from the bus shortly before it departed from a stopover point.
“I was already seated in the bus when I felt strongly in my spirit that I should come down,” he said. “I didn’t understand it, but I obeyed. Later, I heard that the bus had crashed and many people died. That was how God saved me.”
Relatives of the victims confirmed that the traders had travelled together to attend the wedding of a colleague and were on their way back to Umuahia when the tragedy occurred. Many of the deceased were said to be popular in local markets and were known for dealing in foodstuffs and household goods.
Community leaders described the incident as devastating, noting that several families had lost breadwinners in a single day. Markets in parts of Umuahia were partially shut as traders mourned their colleagues.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps said a preliminary investigation had begun to determine the cause of the crash. Possible factors being considered include excessive speed, poor road conditions and mechanical failure.
“The exact cause of the accident will be established after a full investigation,” a road safety official said. “We urge motorists to obey traffic rules and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on long journeys.”
Abia State authorities also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and promised support for those who sustained injuries. Burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the affected families in the coming days.
The tragic incident has once again raised concerns over road safety in Nigeria, especially during festive and ceremonial travels when many people journey in groups to attend social events.
